TIMELINE

Timeline 1989-2000

Years leading up to ENCODE

This page will detail the years leading up to the ENCODE project. It will start with the founding of NHGRI and its early intents in completing the Human Genome Project. These years are important as they are directly responsible for the birth of ENCODE. The final result of the HGP in 2003 made scientists to propose the ENCODE project in an effort to decipher the functional elements of the genes discovered through the HGP.

Timeline 2000- present

ENCODE Years

This timeline details the events that occured after the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003. Immediately after, scientists began working on the ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA Elements) Project to create a database of functional elements in our genome such as histone modifications, DNA methylations, and areas where the gene is regulated by certain sequences.
