Sanger Method

The Sanger method was developed by Fred Sanger in 1977 and is one of the first methods of DNA sequencing.

In the 1970s, Fred Sanger developed this primitive sequencing method which gave scientists hope that DNA sequencing was possible. This method was made possible by the development of the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) used to amplify and replicate a targeted area of DNA. The sanger method has a very low throughput rate and can only sequence up to a couple hundred base pairs at a time. The cost was also very high and it took a long time. Today, the sanger method is only used for low throughput sequencing and individual sequencing projects of only a couple hundred base pairs at a time.
